Still in Love, But Running on Empty? How to Stay a Team After Baby

Parents enjoying a quiet moment together

"And now it's our time," you sigh as you flop onto the sofa next to your partner. Feet up, a glass of wine and something tasty on the table, Netflix on - and nothing else. Barely two seconds later, you hear soft snoring beside you. You look at the lines on his forehead, the shadows under his eyes. Where did the time go? Where are the long, lazy evenings together? Sex? What was that again?

It sounded so lovely: heading to the park with the family and a picnic basket, or cycling to a goat farm together (our advice: do it, baby goats are wonderful). But instead of a rosy glow, it can sometimes feel more like a bubble you're trapped in. You wouldn't trade your kids for anything, that's certain. But they also take an enormous amount of energy: the laundry pile seems to grow taller by the day, your nights are short, and the spark with your partner sometimes ends up on the back burner. Here are a few ways to rekindle it.

The little things

A romantic weekend away is always a lovely idea, but an unexpected, affectionate text in the middle of the day can be just as effective. Or simply putting his favourite meal on the table, with a cold beer alongside. It's often the little things that count: a small gesture of appreciation in everyday life.

Honesty goes furthest

Life isn't one big celebration - sometimes you just have a rough day, feel tired, stressed, or frustrated. That's part of it. As tempting as it is to take that frustration out on your partner, it's better to sit down with a cup of tea and explain what's bothering you. It's often more of a relief than you'd expect.

Staying active together

After a day full of nappies, laundry, cooking, and comforting, the sofa is tempting, but doing something active together works wonders. Swimming, a walk, cycling, or a game of tennis: it's not just enjoyable, it's good for your health too.

Getting away for a bit

Away from the toy blocks on the floor, the muslin cloths in the laundry basket, and the crumbs on the counter: sometimes an evening away is exactly what you need. It doesn't have to be far - a small hotel round the corner with a nice bath and a good breakfast can already work wonders. Go to the cinema, try that new restaurant, or visit that one place you're both curious about. When did you last really talk to each other? Seize the chance.

Rediscovering each other

What may once have come naturally can sometimes become rare these days. Time for a fresh start: what do you enjoy, what does he enjoy? Explore it together, without too much pressure or expectation. Just try, and keep trying - before you know it, you'll find your old rhythm again.

Being a parent and a partner at the same time is possible, even if it doesn't always come easily. But the effort you put in pays off many times over.
