General
The composition of baby formulas is highly regulated by the CODEX. As these regional and national authorities don’t always apply the same criteria, there may be slight differences in the recipes in different countries.
Of course you can always be certain that the Kabrita formula sold in your market complies with the latest nutritional insights as well as relevant local legislation.
Kabrita is derived from the Spanish word ‘Cabrito” which means little goat or kid.
Kabrita's infant and toddler formulas have been developed to offer a healthy alternative based on goat milk that meets the average nutritional requirements at a certain age. As each baby is unique with its own, individual growth and development process, we advise you to establish how and when you can best use Kabrita in consultation with your doctor (the health professional who is closely involved in this growth process).
Kabrita is a division of Ausnutria Nutrition. This dairy group is comprised around three well-known dairy and baby and infant formula production facilities in the Netherlands. The company has a rich history in the development and production of baby and toddler formulas.
Ausnutria Ommen was established in 1897 and is responsible for the production of high-quality goat milk powder and other dairy ingredients. Ausnutria Kampen and Lypack Leeuwarden have been producing baby formula since 1936. Over the years, we have produced baby and infant formula for numerous other brands at our production facilities, including a number of renowned, leading global brands.
We do not recommend that you use products whose Best Before date has expired. The effect of the nutrients (e.g. vitamins) may decline after the Best Before date has expired.
The easiest way to check if you have an original Kabrita product is to look at the code on the base of the tin*. This code is linked to our production facility and should read: NL Z0238 EC, NL Z4057 EC or Pluto NL Z4056 EC.
*Attention: In China this code is not stated on the base of the tin, but on the side. In Russia this code is not stated at all due to local legislation.
No, Kabrita has a surprisingly pleasant smell and taste. The fast production process of the fresh goat milk creates a fresh and gentle, mild taste, comparable to the flavour of cow milk-based formula.
*Just like other follow-on milk formulas.
Mother's milk is best for your baby. However, if you are thinking about switching to follow-on milk or toddler milk, you can consider using Kabrita goat milk formula. Kabrita offers goat milk follow-on milk and toddler milk of exceptional quality. This is the result of decades of experience with bottle formulas and the outstanding quality of Dutch goat milk. Goat milk is naturally gentle and mild and forms a good basis for infant formula. Kabrita combines the natural mildness of Dutch goat milk with valuable nutrients such as goat whey protein, DHA Omega-3 fatty acids * and dietary fibres.
Kabrita complies with the regulations for infant formula and is a safe and complete alternative based on goat milk, and suitable for every healthy baby.
*Just like other follow-on milk
Yes, Kabrita is a safe alternative for every healthy baby. The use of goat milk as a basis for infant formula has been approved and found to be safe *. Just like fresh cow milk, fresh goat milk contains too much protein and not all the nutrients that are vital for your child's development. The content of nutrients in all formulas - including Kabrita - have been optimally adapted and supplemented to ensure your child gets exactly the right amount of nutrients that he or she needs.
Kabrita complies with local legislation and regulations.
*Just like other follow-on milk
No, Kabrita is not available in trial packages. We do not believe that the effect and success of a new type of formula can be assessed based on just one or two feeds.
Kabrita products are available in various countries, directly or through our distributors. Please check our world map for more information about Kabrita’s sales points.
The packaging has been changed, due to a new design of the tins, the word Gold has been removed from the packaging. This applies to all countries where Kabrita is sold.
With this change, the composition has also been slightly adjusted due to new EU legislation. This EU legislation is based on the latest scientific developments. The following minor adjustments have been applied to the recipe: Protein slightly down. Fat content slightly up Lactose up a little DHA and AA quite a bit up. Vitamins and minerals adapted to the new EU legislation.
No. Kabrita is not reimbursed by health insurance providers.
Our goats are fed a mixture of feeds, including:
• Straw
• Hay
• Grass (fresh)
• Silage grass
• Maize silage
• Pulp
• Pellets * (pelletised raw materials e.g. cereals such as wheat and barley, but also soy hulls, etc.)
These feeds are often available on the farm. In nature, however, the diet available to the goats is more limited. Goats eat grass, leaves and branches of bushes and trees, depending on what is available. Our farmers supplement the diet fed to the goats as much as possible. They provide feed that contains the necessary energy, protein, vitamins and minerals. This has a positive impact on the health of our goats and the milk they produce. A very important part of their diet is water. A typical milk goat drinks about 10 litres of water per day.
As soon as baby goats are born, they drink milk from their mother. Whether they can drink themselves or whether the goat is milked for them depends on how fast they are able to drink. They are always given colostrum from their mother.
Bottle feeding
Prepare Kabrita goat milk formula according to the instructions below. Instructions for the preparation of the formula are always indicated on the tin and can slightly differ between products and/or countries. Your baby's health depends on carefully following the preparation and storage instructions.
- Prepare the milk no more than one hour before feeding. Wash your hands thoroughly before preparing the milk.
- Boil the bottle and teat for approx. 10 min to sterilise.
- Fill the bottle with the correct amount of boiled water and allow to cool to approx. 40°C.
- Add the indicated amount of Kabrita Gold to the corresponding amount of water.
- Close the bottle and shake well until the powder has dissolved. Test the temperature against the inside of your wrist.
Prepare the milk no more than one hour before feeding. Dispose of any unfinished formula left in the bottle after your baby’s feed.
The shelf life of Kabrita goat milk formula varies between different countries, due to external factors such as the local temperature. The production date and Best Before date are printed on the base of the tin. If in doubt, please contact your local Kabrita distributor for more information.
Breastfeeding is the ideal food for your baby during the first six months of life. After this period, it is completely safe to combine breastfeeding with formula. It will probably take a little while for your baby to get used to drinking from a bottle. It is important to gradually reduce the amount of breast feeds per day. For example, replace one session of breastfeeding by feeding one bottle of formula every three to four days.
Goat milk naturally contains many nutrients. Your toddler is currently in an important stage of his or her development. Every day he or she is learning new skills and becoming more active at the same time. This implies that your toddler's nutritional needs are changing too. That is not always an easy thing to deal with, as toddlers can be notoriously picky eaters. We developed Kabrita 3 toddler milk to ensure that your toddler receives the essential nutrients and energy he or she needs. Unlike ordinary goat milk, this formula contains extra nutrients so that your toddler's changing nutritional needs are satisfied optimally.
This depends on the amount and number of feeds your baby needs. One 800 g tin of Kabrita can be used to prepare around six litres of formula. An indication of the amount per feed is always stated on the tin. Your doctor can advise you on the precise amounts that your baby needs.
Once opened, the goat milk formula must be used within four weeks. Store the tin in a cool, dry and dark place (not in the refrigerator).
Occasionally the scoop will settle in the powder. Try tilting the tin and tapping gently against the side to displace the powder. This should help you locate the scoop.
Store the opened tin in a cool, dry and dark place (not in the refrigerator). Once opened, the goat milk formula must be used within four weeks.
This depends on:
- Age of the child (especially in stage 1 (0-6 months) an infant will drink different quantities of formula each day)
- The stage (stage 1/2/3 recommend different amounts of formula per day depending on the age of the infant)
You can prepare various quantities of formula per tin.
Kabrita 1: 13.5 g + 90 ml water makes 100 ml formula. 1 tin = 800 gram. So 800 g / 13.5 g = 59 portions of 100 ml = about 5900 ml formula. So: almost 6 litres from one tin of Kabrita 1.
Kabrita 2: 14 g + 90 ml water makes 100 ml formula. 1 tin = 800 gram. 800/14 = 57 portions of 100 ml > about 5700 ml formula from one tin of Kabrita 2.
Kabrita 3:
14.5 g + 90 ml water makes 100 ml formula. 1 tin = 800 gram. 800/14.5 = 55 portions of 100 ml > about 5500 ml formula from one tin of Kabrita 3.
Ailments
No, if someone is allergic to cow’s milk it is very likely that there will also be an allergic reaction to goat milk. A cow’s milk allergy is mediated by the protein from cow’s milk. Although the protein from goat milk are different and contain less allergens, it is still very likely that a cross reaction will occur. Therefore we strongly advise against using goat milk as an alternative in case of a cow’s milk allergy.
A medically confirmed cow's milk allergy is the most common food allergy in infants (between 2% and 5% of babies and young children [1]), while there is a much larger group that experiences discomfort after consuming cow’s milk products. These consumers may suffer from a so-called cow’s milk intolerance where components in the milk – either the fat, protein, or a combination of components – are digested poorly. These consumers are likely to benefit from a switch to goat milk based nutrition.
[1] Pensabene, L.; Salvatore, S.; D’Auria, E.; Parisi, F.; Concolino, D.; Borrelli, O. Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy in Infancy: A Risk Factor for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders in Children? Nutrients 2018, 10, 1716. [CrossRef] [PubMed]
Cow milk allergy and cow milk or lactose intolerance are different disorders. The names are sometimes incorrectly used as the similar symptoms they cause are often confused.
In the case of a (medically) confirmed cow milk allergy, the immune system responds immediately to the protein in cow milk. However, a medically confirmed allergy to cow milk is relatively rare (2 to 3% of children under the age of six). This usually happens within hours of ingestion and results in moderate to severe symptoms, which can include:
- Swelling around the mouth
- Difficulty swallowing
- Vomiting and regurgitation
- Severe diarrhoea
- Food refusal
- Failure to thrive (insufficient weight gain)
- Severe colic
In rare cases, anaphylactic shock leading to death
With mild complaints due to hypersensitivity to cow milk, goat milk could possibly be a gentle alternative. These mild complaints are often called a cow milk intolerance. A cow milk intolerance can occur when components of cow milk – the fat, protein, or a combination of components – are digested poorly. Unlike a cow milk allergy, a cow milk intolerance is not a medical condition. It can however lead to mild to moderate symptoms that can affect the skin, gastrointestinal, and respiratory systems. These symptoms can take days, weeks or even months to present and can include:
- Mild to moderate eczema
- Nappy rash
- Abdominal discomfort
- Gas
- Bloating
- Constipation
- Loose stools
- Colic
- Lung and nasal congestion
A lactose intolerance causes symptoms due to poorly digested lactose. Lactose is present in all milk produced by mammals (including humans) and is often referred to as milk sugar. As breast milk also naturally contains lactose, it is very unlikely that your baby or toddler will be lactose intolerant. In many cases, poor lactose digestion occurs after weaning. It may lead to the symptoms as described below and is, in that case, referred to as lactose intolerance:
- Abdominal bloating and cramps
- Flatulence
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea
- Rumbling stomach
- Vomiting
In case of complaints always consult your doctor first - or the health professional at the child health clinic- to rule out a cow milk allergy or lactose intolerance, before switching to Kabrita goat milk formula.
Kabrita's goat milk products all contain milk. The formulation of the products may differ per country and may contain fish oil and/or soy. Always check the packaging for specific information about allergens in the product.
Yes, Kabrita goat milk formula contains lactose. Lactose is an important source of carbohydrates that deliver the necessary energy for the healthy growth and development of your baby or toddler. Lactose can be found in almost all milk produced by mammals; including breast milk. A lactose intolerance causes symptoms due to poorly digested lactose. As breast milk also naturally contains lactose, it is very unlikely that your baby or toddler will be lactose intolerant.
To ensure that babies and toddlers are given enough carbohydrates, the minimum amount of lactose that a formula must contain has been established in the European legislation on infant formula.
In case of complaints always consult your doctor first - or the health professional at the child health clinic- to rule out a lactose intolerance, before switching to Kabrita goat milk formula.
Yes, goat milk contains lactose; about 10% less than cow milk. Lactose can be found in almost all milk produced by mammals; including breast milk. A lactose intolerance causes symptoms due to poorly digested lactose.
Yes, a change in the consistency, colour and/ or frequency of stools is normal after starting to give solid food or after a change in the formula.
Yes, a change in the consistency, colour and/ or frequency of stools is normal after starting to give solid food or after a change in the formula.
Reflux occurs when food backs up (refluxes) from the stomach. A regularly seen symptom of reflux is that the baby brings up milk, or solids, during or shortly after feeding.
Reflux is a common complaint with babies. Reflux is caused in infants by an insufficiently mature ring of muscle between the oesophagus and the stomach. This ring of muscle develops during the first year of life and in most cases the symptoms will decrease or disappear.
Ingredients
No fluoride has been added to the formulas. The formula does contain very low amounts of fluoride contributed by the natural formulation of the ingredients.
Glucose syrup is used in Kabrita goat milk formula as a 'carrier' for important nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals and dietary fibres. These are essential ingredients for modern formulas, but unfortunately, they are extremely difficult to add to the formula without using glucose syrup as a carrier. By dosing them using a carrier agent, these ingredients can be added in the right amount and distributed through the powder correctly. This explains why our formulas contain a very small amount of glucose syrup. Although it is not always mandatory to state 'glucose syrup' as an ingredient on the tin, we believe in transparency and want to offer our customers full and complete information.
No, Kabrita does not contain additives such as sugar, artificial aroma, colorants and/or flavouring.
Goat milk naturally contains nucleotides. Nucleotide are part of DNA. They play an important role in energy storage.
Every mother is free to make the best choices regarding how to feed her child as she thinks best. The presence or absence of sugar in food is a frequently made and conscious consideration. Sugar must be stated on the formula packaging. It is listed as an ingredient on the tins of Kabrita goat milk formula. This does not, however, mean that granulated sugar has been added to Kabrita goat milk formula. Sugar is an umbrella term for all the "short chain” carbohydrates, of which lactose ("milk sugar") is the most important in both breastfeeding and Kabrita goat milk formula. These carbohydrates are converted into the energy your baby needs for healthy growth and development during this phase. To ensure your baby is given enough carbohydrates, the minimum amount of carbohydrates in formula has been established by legislation. In Kabrita the amount of "sugar" is formed by lactose and a small amount of glucose syrup.
No, the goat milk that we use for our formula is not organic. Due to the limited availability of organic goat milk, it is not possible to produce our globally available formulas using fully organic goat milk.
Fish oil is very rich in DHA, the polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acid found in the brain and retinal tissue.
As well as being an important source of energy, fat is also needed for functions such as maintaining body temperature and keeping the skin and hair healthy. The addition of plant-based oils to Kabrita goat milk formulas ensures the baby is given the right amount of fatty acids in the optimum composition. Palmitic acid, which is an important fatty acid for babies, is present in breast milk over the world. Because (plant-based) palm oil is also rich in palmitic acid, we decided to add palm oil to our formula.
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is a long chain of polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids and is found in the brain and eye tissue.
FOS and GOS are fructooligosaccharides and galactooligosaccharides; also known as prebiotic fibres. Prebiotic fibres promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the large intestine, inspired by the effect of breast milk in the large intestine.
Most of the salt found in Kabrita is from the sodium that is naturally present in goat milk. Sodium is required by the human body for various functions such as the fluid balance and muscle contraction. In order to comply with nutritional requirements, a minimum amount of sodium must be present in infant formula.
No. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are not used in the production of Kabrita. Strict European legislation regulating infant nutrition prohibits the use of genetically modified ingredients (GMO's) in formula. This means that, in addition to Kabrita, no GMOs are used in the production of all other bottle feeds sold within Europe.
Production
At Kabrita we monitor and control every link in the production process. This means that we manage every link in the chain: from milk collection to filling the tins and distributing the end product. The foundation of Kabrita is formed by around 50 Dutch goat farmers who supply their milk exclusively to Kabrita. All these farmers use Dutch white Saanen goats, known for their high-quality goat milk. To guarantee this quality, these farmers work in accordance with the KwaliGeit quality assurance protocols. The special Dutch quality assurance system has not only established guidelines governing the care and welfare of our animals, but also the hygiene standards at goat farms.
After the milk has been collected from our goat farmers, it is transported to our own production facilities in the provinces of Overijssel and Friesland. At these production facilities, we combine our 75 years of experience in formulas with the latest technology.
All our production facilities produce according to HACCP principles and are audited by internationally approved third parties.
That depends on the specific product. All the baby food from Kabrita is made using Dutch goat milk and is produced in our production facilities in the Netherlands. The entire process is performed under our own management; from milk collection to filling the tins.
We closely monitor the production process to guarantee products of the very highest quality.
Yes, all Kabrita production processes are regulated and closely monitored by ourselves and independent monitoring agencies.
All Kabrita products are produced in a closed and monitored process. To safeguard the strictest hygiene standards, visitors are not permitted at our production facilities and/ or our goat farms.
However, some of our Dutch farmers do organise open days when visitors are welcome to visit their farms. Check our website for more information!
