Motherhood isn't always sunshine and roses - most of us have found that out firsthand by now. Family life brings beautiful moments, but also a lot of hard graft, from the never-ending laundry to the daily care your little one needs. That's why we're sharing these 10 tips to help you stay refreshed and steady.
Get moving
A healthy mom is a happy mom! It might sound like a cliché, but exercise genuinely helps you feel better in yourself. Physical activity prompts your body to release endorphins and dopamine - chemicals that give you a sense of wellbeing. Good for your mood, and good for your health too.
Make sure you get enough sleep
This tip isn't a given for every parent - not every baby sleeps through the night or lets you sleep in. But even with a little night owl at home, it's worth continuing to think of yourself and getting as much rest as you can.
Eat well
When you're not feeling great, a bag of crisps or a bar of chocolate can be tempting. Understandable, but not ideal: unhealthy food might feel good in the moment, but it doesn't do much for you in the long run. Try to keep eating well, even on the harder days - and you'll be setting a good example while you're at it.
Listen to your favourite music
Sounds simple, but music genuinely helps you relax. Whether you're cooking or giving the bathroom a thorough clean, everything feels a little easier with your favourite music playing in the background.
Drink enough water
Water is like fuel for your body - drink too little, and everything runs a bit less smoothly. Skip the sugary soft drinks and aim for at least a litre and a half of water a day. It works wonders, not just for your mood, but for your skin too.
Reconnect with your partner
Don't let yourself get swept up in the daily grind of motherhood - keep talking with your partner. You're running this family together, not on your own. Keep enjoying each other's company too: plan the odd outing together, even without the kids.
Teach your children to be independent
At first, a baby is naturally entirely dependent on you. Later on, it can be hard to let go as your child gets older - but it's good for both of you. Teaching your children independence gives you a bit more breathing room, and children often genuinely enjoy helping out around the house.
Give yourself some free time
Set your "mum mode" aside now and then, and give yourself some time just for you. Whether that's a coffee and a good magazine on the sofa, or a night out with friends: as long as you enjoy it. That downtime is what you need to keep up with busy days full of playdates and to-do lists.
Ask for help
There's genuinely nothing wrong with admitting you can't manage it all on your own right now. In fact, many parents push through for far too long before asking for help. It's wiser to speak up in time than to wait until you're completely worn out.
Enjoy it!
Don't worry too much, and above all, enjoy it. Before you know it, those little toddlers will have grown into independent young adults who suddenly need you a lot less. Enjoy every moment while you still can!
