That Precious Feeding Moment With Your Baby: How to Make It Even Sweeter

A parent feeding their baby comfortably in a chair

Feeding your baby is an intimate, special moment together. A few small tweaks can make it even better - at home and on the go.

In the bedroom

Feeding in the bedroom has a wonderfully cosy feel. Whether you snuggle up together in bed or settle into a comfortable chair or rocking chair, close the curtains and create a sense of calm. Make sure you're both well supported, with a pillow if it helps. At night, a soft nightlight works well; during the day, let in some natural light, as long as the sun isn't shining directly on your faces. Practical tip: keep a few muslin cloths within reach.

In the living room

The sofa or your favourite chair is a practical spot for feeding - handy if you need to keep an eye on another child, if you have visitors, or simply during the day. Turn off the TV and turn down the radio so this intimate moment isn't disturbed. A few cushions for support help here too, and a muslin cloth within reach is always useful.

On the go

Finding a suitable spot while out and about can be a real challenge. In a restaurant, look for a quiet corner with as few people and as little background noise as possible - this can distract your baby and disrupt the feed. Make sure your nappy bag has everything you need: muslin cloths, a bottle if needed, a nursing pillow, and of course the milk. Having the milk warmed up there? Gently shake the bottle afterwards (not too hard, as this creates air bubbles) to spread the heat evenly, and always check it isn't too warm.

Tip: did you know there are special nursing covers? These shield your baby during feeds so they only have eyes for you - handy if your baby is easily distracted.
