No two children are alike, and that's clear from the first few months. While one baby happily sleeps in, another turns out to be a real night owl. For many parents, that's genuinely tough: sleepless nights can wear you down, literally and figuratively. Here are some essential tips for surviving them.
Timing
Does your little one sleep poorly at night but nap just fine during the day? Chances are they don't need much more sleep at night. Try gradually cutting back daytime naps and keeping your baby awake a little longer - but not too long, since an overtired baby can end up in hysterical crying instead. Getting the timing right is key.
A bedtime routine
Babies love rhythm and routine. Try creating a lovely bedtime routine so your little one knows sleep time is coming: a nice bath, a bit of play and cuddling, then off to bed. This routine will naturally look different for every child.
Think of yourself too
You'll only get through the exhausting nights if you keep taking care of yourself too. Only slept three hours last night? Try taking it easier during the day. Don't be afraid to ask your partner, family, or friends for help - your best friend will likely be happy to babysit for an hour so you can catch up on sleep.
Go to bed early yourself
Does your baby fall asleep early but not sleep through the night? Then it's smart to head to bed early yourself too. Don't stay up for hours to finish that one film - go to bed on time instead, maybe with a book.
Don't lose hope
It really does get better. Don't lose hope, and try to stay calm - if you get stressed or irritable, your little one often picks up on it.
