Won't your baby sleep, and are you struggling to settle them? Try the tips below. Every baby is different - a trick that doesn't work for yours might work brilliantly for another.
1. Start with a fixed routine
If you do the same thing before bedtime every time, your baby will gradually understand when it's time to sleep. For example, give them a bath right before bedtime.
2. Darken the nursery
Keeping the room dark at night helps your baby learn the difference between day and night. Blackout curtains can really make a difference here, especially in summer, when it stays light longer.
3. Use the crib only for sleeping
It can help if the crib is used exclusively as the sleep spot, rather than your baby falling asleep in your arms or in the pram. This way, you avoid having to rock them to sleep throughout the whole day.
4. Rhythm matters
A fixed sleep spot (see tip 3) and consistent bedtimes help build a rhythm. Your baby gets used to it and eventually falls asleep more easily once they settle into their own rhythm.
5. Swaddling
An age-old technique: wrapping your baby snugly in cloths, which can create a sense of security. Want to know if swaddling could work for your baby, and how to do it safely? Read our separate article on swaddling.
6. A familiar scent
Place one of your own items of clothing in your baby's bed, so a familiar scent surrounds them. This can have a calming effect.
7. Monotonous sounds
Monotonous, humming sounds can be soothing - think of a vacuum cleaner, washing machine, or dishwasher. Don't have these appliances near your baby's room? There are also apps that play calming sounds with a similar effect.
